Can you name many women artists, and do you think about contemporary subcultures when you think about ‘Japanese tradition’? This symposium celebrates contemporary artists crossing boundaries in Japanese craft, in a 21st-century global context.
2025年の《GO FOR KOGEI》プロジェクトの一環として開催される本シンポジウムでは、21世紀のグローバルな文脈において、日本の工芸の枠を越えて活動する現代アーティストたちの創造力に光を当てます。
これまで《GO FOR KOGEI》は、北陸地域を起点に「日本の工芸」や「伝統」という言葉の意味を問い直す展覧会や対話の場を創出してきました。
今回のシンポジウムでは、特にジェンダーの壁を乗り越え、制度の外で活動する女性作家たち、またサブカルチャーやディアスポラ（移民・移住）文化に根ざした表現者たちに注目します。
登壇者には、第一線で活躍する女性作家、サブカルチャーや周縁文化に関わるアーティスト、V&Aミュージアムの関係者、工芸研究の専門家など、多彩な顔ぶれが揃います。
これまでの“工芸”の枠組みを揺さぶり、より多層的で開かれた視点から、日本の工芸の「現在地」を捉え直す機会となるでしょう。
As part of the 2025 GO FOR KOGEI project, this symposium highlights the vibrant creativity of contemporary artists who transcend the conventional boundaries of Japanese craft in a 21st-century global context.
GO FOR KOGEI has continuously questioned the definitions of “Japanese craft” and “tradition” through exhibitions and dialogues based in the Hokuriku region of Japan.
This symposium focuses on women artists who challenge gender norms and operate outside institutional frameworks, as well as creators rooted in subcultures and diaspora communities.
Speakers will include leading women artists, subcultural and marginal voices, contributors from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), and craft specialists.
Together, they will challenge conventional frameworks and invite us to reconsider the current state of Japanese craft through broader, more inclusive perspectives.
